Film Magazine Plan

Main image: What is the main image going to be? What type of shot composition/angle etc?

  • The main image is going to be one of the main actors, either the protagonist or the antagonist within the film.
  • close up shot of the actor, displaying mise-en scene of a suit.
  • actor conforms to conventions by looking straight into the camera.
Name of magazine: What are the connotations of the title?

Faded – This film title refers directly to Gangster crime films, as 'fade' is the lose of brightness and vividness this definition is shown in majority of gangster films.

Headline: What is the headline and how does it match the film/actor etc.

The headline will be the film title, this means the image will anchor the headline as the image will be of the main characters. The actor's name will also be positioned above the headline and so the actors' reputation should attract certain parts of the audience.

Sell lines: reference to other films/actors/directors/ film festivals.

  • Directors
  • Exclusive interviews with famous directors
  • Introduction of highly anticipated upcoming films
  • Famous actors to correspond with the upcoming films
Banners/splash: other features, competitions etc.
  • Limited use of buttons/splash to emphasis the image (Similar
Magazine tagline:

No tagline

Other info: (price, date of issue etc)
  • The Price and Date of the issue will be positioned at the bottom of the magazine cover in a same font as this is very conventional in magazines in general.
  • I will also position the Barcode towards the bottom of the magazine cover for authenticity and the website of the film magazine.

Masthead Font Research

After doing further film magazine research, I concluded that Masthead fonts are quite similar to a certain extent because each magazine is trying to cement their name in the audience's mind; in an attempt to secure future purchases. Most magazines do this by displaying a considerably bold font in a large size that is usually in front of the Main image or hidden at the back of the main image.
Therefore, I've chosen these fonts as they all have a large bold visual impact and this is essential for a Masthead. The fonts are not all alike so, it was easier to come to a final decision, but after liaising with my production team and taking feedback, I've decided to go with the second font at the top of the page. It is very bold so it can capture the audience's attention, but at the same time, it is quite a simple font so that image/model can be more overpowering on the magazine cover.

Film magazine and Poster sketches

Inseparable - Name of film
Attainment - Name of magazine (changed to faded)

Film Magazine Colour Scheme

Using Coolors.co, I have displayed the colours I will like to use to for my film magazine cover. Film magazine covers are very unique in their colour schemes because they usually reflect the film portrayed on the cover.and so I have chosen colours accordingly.

Yellow- I chose this colour because it compliments the chose scheme of my film magazine image which is black and white, this allows the audience to be able to view the sell lines effectively.

Red,Black and White - These colours present sophistication and this is reflected in the gangster films. This is relevant as the mise-en-scene of the police profession is predominately black and white and sophisticated and so the audience can interpret the genre of the film portrayed through these colours.

Moodboard for Poster.

This is a inspirational mood board to help me gauge with different poster's and figure out techniques and ideas that i can use for my own Film Poster.
Overall, The Looper poster was the most appealing production to me as it is very simple in terms of it's background but the effect used is also the effective in conveying the genre of the film.

Production Logo

This is the logo of our team's production house called Standard Screening. The name Standard Screening originated from the colloquial meaning behind the word 'standard' in which means to be better than average and to be someone or to do something that 'sets the bar' for everyone else. Using this word and its meaning ties along our film trailer genre which is UK gangster crime as it is a term that some of our target audience and cast members would know and say on a daily basis. My main idea when constructing this logo was simplicity, this is because many successful brand logos are simple in which made them very effective as viewers were able to recognise and associate the logo to the brand.

How will we utilise Social Media in promoting our Trailer?

Summary: The Role of Social Media in Film Marketing.

Before the use of social media, the word of mouth was very prominent and only method in aiding previews (trailers) and Advertisements.
However with the rise of technology and Web 2.0, social media's such as Facebook, twitter and mobiles have made it accessible to social network and promote a film on social media for example this is what made it possible for the star wars: The force awakens trailer to get over 1 million Views in  23 minutes.
The fact that the internet is filled with defined groups and fandom that overlap, Social media has allowed the category and hashtags of group to allow people such as Filmmakers to target a particular demographic with similar interests.

So how will our group approach the marketing of our film?

The Marketing of our trailer will come from Word of mouth but also the using of Social media and it's power for example using Twitter and making a twitter page that is tailored to the genre and people (fandoms) that like the film. The use of Snapchat which majority of our target audience used very frequently, using this platform will give us a platform to not only share a video but personalise or tailor it to each individual, as well as that snapchat acts as a 'Word of mouth' as you re able to video yourself promoting something/someone.

Meeting notes 18/10/2016

Casting boys for the main role:

Spirito: (same actor for the other twin) cloning editing

mum: Need a girl actor.
Props: Toy baby
 ----> fake crying (audio)

Discussion on the editing of the twins for the ending scene: Paning of the two people, for the twins so that it looks like it is both of them but there will be a cut so the the audience will see the two

The Girl on the train Analysis of Formalistic conventions.

The girl on train depicts a women who was kidnapped at a certain time on a certain day, the trailer starts off with a quote from the supporting character and which later we find out his been kidnapped and killed,  the use of slow music to the point of the use of inter-titles, "4:36pm" and "A week ago" to describe the situation of the missing person, Megan and give the audience to understand what the rest of the trailer will be a about and a hint of what characters are involved and how the situation will gradually escalate with is the film also starts off with the use of accolades at the top and says "based on a thriller that shocked the world" with the title.

The use of the Music which increases after the linear editing at the beginning of the trailer which gives the audience a taste of what is about is changed halfway through the trailer as the use of non linear editing in conjunction with the fast and increased tempo of music is used to describe the situation the the trailer showing bit of the main characters in different situations to increase tension throughout this montage though we see the dialogue change to one liners and the character, such as the the Ex-husband of Rachel and Rachel herself did not have direct conversation but once dialogue is exchanged by one character the scene changes to another however the police women and Rachel did have a conversation which may show that this one liner type conversations in dialogue is not always true.

The cliff hanger at the end with the main character saying "I'm afraid of myself" which leave the audience wondering why she is afraid of herself? who is she talking too? and why is she talking to the person? in addition, in this trailer the use of voiceover were not present.

"You want as many people as possible to consume your art and to do that, you have to be a businessperson"- Halsey

This Quote really spoke to me as it showed me that any form of Art that you want people to consume or take on should be dealt in a business like manner because Art is a precious thing especially in today's society, with such a vast array of art going around which can lead to Art being mistreated in different ways by different people but being a boss of your own art will allow you to control who consumes it and how it is utilized.

Film Magazine analysis 2

This issue of total film, the title is partly  covered. However, the logo has its own identity, in the same way, a film title can have its own identity. The FILM title is often positioned relevant to the film being featured. For example in this SKYFALL issue. The title has been positioned neatly at the top of the magazine with the whole ‘L’ covered. This could be conveyed through the image and therefore giving the issue of the magazine a more sophisticated  look.

A Variation  in text colours and textures make the magazine cover and text itself more effective for giving off meaning and makes it more interesting to look at. The SKYFALL has used a metal looking font on it. This creates and portrays the main image of James bond as the masculine and hard type, reflecting his character in the film. The colour scheme of this issue is very distinctive and has an overpowering colour of yellow, maybe to highlight more important  things in the magazine also so that the magazine seems more Aesthetically pleasing.

Each issue of Total Film magazine features a newly released film to use on the front cover. A lot of layers are built up in the cover, often with a backdrop as the background, the FILM title above that and a character or feature from the film are on the top layer. This is the layer that appears most  in our face. We automatically recognise the movie being featured on the cover. This works well when selling the magazine. Total Film also previews news about big movies to appeal to all audiences, informing the issue contains more than just the featured movie “The hobbit”. This promotes sales for fans of the smaller print movies.

Film Magazine cover Analysis.

The masthead for the “Empire” magazine is the biggest and brightest piece of text on the magazine because it stands out and draws attention to the reader or film enthusiasts  wanting to buy a magazine, the masthead also acts as a logo and a branding to the magazine as it is internationally based so the way the masthead is presented allows it to be recognised by everyone.

The website under the masthead is important especially for film lovers because  they are most likely go online and look beyond the film magazine and look for exclusive news and new film release and many more. The use of social media such as twitter or the Instagram of Empire  also is aimed at ages 16-25, to get them more engaged into the magazine as well as selling the film.
The use of the barcode makes it obviously that this is not a free magazine, the way the barcode is positioned does not get in the way of the main image and does not steal the focus of the target audience.
The use of the tagline “world’s biggest movie magazine” attracts readers as it guarantees high quality and states the popularity of the magazine.

The date and price is in a small text near the masthead. The price is shown in a small text because the central image attracts the audience before they find out how much it costs. The price is £3.99 which is quite expensive for a magazine. Also, the date shown is January 2009 which indicates that it is a monthly magazine as it has no specific date of the publication mentioned.
This could also be the reason as to why the magazine is more expensive because the company only publish the magazine every month. The date helps the audience keep up to date with the magazine.

Poster Analysis 2: American Gangster

The film poster of the “American gangster” is very informative and gives the idea a very clear idea about the genre of the film. The focal point of the image is the actor, Denzel Washington, this makes the audience understand that the film is centered around this character. Denzel Washington is represented photographically as the main colours used in the poster are highly contrasted use of black and white and red which are typically colours for a gangster film which this genre conforms to, reflect the terror and corruption that is represented in the movie.  The highly contrasted white suit makes the title of the film stand out. The use of iconography showed in the poster for example the Gun and suits which are icons used in the genre of gangster movies, the use of the gun show the corruption  that the main character or a hint of the lifestyle the main character may be part of coupled with the white suit may imply how he was about to get to the position of him being able to wear the suit through violence and terror, these iconographies create a professional advertising campaign as the same title with the red line is integrated within most posters; which creates a professional collective promotional package. The use of a silhouette of the Chicago city which is layered on top of the character shows the audience where the film will be set and the proportion between the city and the Main figure of the poster shows his power and his position within the city of Chicago. Although there are no critics quotes on the poster, the poster does show the previous movies that the director of this movie has been on e.g. the “gladiator and the black hawk down” this also gives way for a audience who watched the two movies to be able to watch this one, expecting it to be the same or even better quality as the gladiator or the black hawk down, even though there is no tagline on the poster, the use of the notable actor “Denzel Washington” gives the audience and fans of Denzel Washington a interest into the movie.

This poster is very similar to the previous in terms of the text  and the background. It again states the main actor to entice the audience and to encourage fans and also, there is a similar dark back ground, however the difference in this poster is that the main actor is joined with another actor, the contrasting colour between both the men show the good and bad side of Chicago and may also connote the rivalry between gangsters and the police further illustrating the film and emphasizes the idea of the “American gangster”.

Distribution Houses

Who are the main film distributors in the UK?

1. Lionsgate Films
This is an American production/distribution studio. It is the kn own as the largest and most successful film studio in North America. They work with a wide range of genres, including horror, romance, comedy, thrillers, etc. They have distributed and produced a lot of crime thrillers such as 'Snitch' , 'A Most Wanted Man', 'The Expendables' and many more.
The highest grossing film released by this distribution house was 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' in 2013 with the total domestic gross being $424,660,047. Despite the fact it isn't the same genre as the one my group decided on, it still illustrates the kind of success this group gets.

2. Universal

This UK distribution arm releases all of Working Title’s films – making it the most successful distributor of UK films. Think Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and I Give it a Year amongst a host of others. Probably not a company to approach as a new-comer.
Titles include: The Holiday, The Good Shepherd
UK titles include: Children Of Men, Hot Fuzz, Magicians

2. Revolver Entertainment
This is a distribution house based in the United States and the United Kingdom. Revolver works with a lot of independently produced movies which works in their favour because it gives the studio a sense of authenticity, This distribution house also works with a range of different genres however, the most movie releases were crime, drama, thrillers and horrors, They have released a lot of gangster dramas such as 'Adulthood', 'Original Gangster', '300 Miles' and 'Act of Grace'. All of which were popular in theatres.

Justice League trailer analysis

Throughout the trailer, we hear the voiceover of batman 'ben Affleck', which is the speech straight out of the film however during the trailer we do see the character speak as well throughout the trailer. The character with the trailer is introduced quite early, showing their individual talents/superpowers. The protagonist 'ben Affleck' although the title of the film being the justice league indicating a collective but it shows the Movie through the eyes of batman but in hindsight, the movie is largely based on the progress of the whole justice league in general.

The mise en scene was highly creative with the creativity of each superhero with their own costume bringing forth their own identity individual, indicating a direct relation to the movie about superheroes. Also, the shots selected displayed exciting and action filled scene, this will appeal to a greater audience that enjoys action packed films which feature superheroes. this combined with the props demonstrates that film is going to be at a very fast pace and thus thrilling. Especially with the contribution of editing, the shots gathered plus the editing which is dramatic and dynamic especially towards the end amplifies the genre of the film

Online review of Justice League.

Here at Comic-Con, director Zack Snyder debuted the first trailer for his upcoming filmJustice League, and here's the shocker: it actually looks fantastic. The trailer starts with Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne, hunting down Aquaman, presumably putting together the team of warriors that Warner Bros. hopes will be its answer to The Avengers. From there, nearly all the big names get a moment to shine, including Cyborg, Wonder Woman, and The Flash. (Superman himself seems to be missing, for reasons as-of-yet unknown.)
While Man of Steel and its sequel have been largely criticized by their dour, dismal feel,Justice League seems to be taking a cue from Suicide Squad. The tone is airy and light, with each moment played more for laughs than a Snyder-ean portent of inevitable doom. In short, it makes it look like the movie could actually be fun, something that Marvel has perfected with its superhero movies, but DC and Warner Bros. have constantly struggled with. Of course, it's important to remember that Zack Snyder's films often have great trailers, and no place is better suited to hype a comic book crowd than Hall H at Comic-Con... but for the moment, we're actually looking forward to 2017. -The Verge
The verge's review had allowed fans of the justice league to get a taste what people thought of the upcoming movie. although, there are not many reviews on the justice league yet it is clear that reviews are now dedicating the rates and the audience views especially between the suicide squad and the justice league bringing forth competition mostly in the comic con fandom.

Film website research.

Justice league(2017): http://www.justiceleaguethemovie.com/

The Modern marketing techniques of the justice league have come in various ways through social media and official websites which are designed to complement the 'look' of a marketing campaign.
In this case, the initial design of Justice league's official website consists of a simplistic design and very integrated with the film allowing it to look a certain way.
For example, the dark background allowed the boldness of silver coloured title to stand out and thus begin visual pleasing and eye catching to the audience of the website also the countdown feature when entering the website shows that the website is going to be fairly interactive as well as showing of logos which identified each of the many characters within the movie.

The website is very distinguishable because it has gone against the conventions of a normal website with a white background allowing it to seem unusual and more appealing to the audience as something new and different. Also, the display shown shows the audience the genre of the film instantly. The franchise has also integrated the use of social media on the website at the bottom right to allow the audience/fans to stay connected and updated everywhere they go For example, Through Instagram, they are able to view the latest that goes on and also receive snippets of the movie.

Welcome!

Hello, this blog is for my A2 media production. Where I will be posting all tasks that has led to the making of this production, Including Reasearch planning, Audience Research and the finally film poster and magazine front cover (including drafting)
